Earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 triggers a tsunami warning

January 1, 2024. At 7:10 UTC, a severe earthquake shakes the west coast of Japan. The earthquake has a magnitude of 7.5. The highest tsunami warning is currently in effect. Waves of up to 5 meters are forecast. The largest wave measured (so far) is 1.2 meters.

Numerous buildings and roads were damaged. Personal injuries are not yet known.
