Frequently Asked Questions about Time Zones

Answers about UTC, daylight saving, the date line and more.
What is a time zone?
A time zone is a region of the Earth where the same legal clock time is used. The Earth is divided into 24 main zones, each roughly 15° of longitude wide. Political boundaries and special cases (India, Iran, Nepal) push the practical count to over 40 active zones.
How many time zones are there in the world?
24 main zones (UTC-12 to UTC+12) plus several offsets in 30- or 45-minute increments (e.g. India UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45, Chatham Islands UTC+12:45). Including all DST variants, the IANA database tracks 400+ named zone IDs.
What does UTC mean?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global reference time. Introduced in 1972 as a successor to GMT, it is based on atomic clocks and does not observe daylight saving. All other zones are expressed as an offset from UTC.
What is the difference between UTC, GMT and CET?
UTC is the modern scientific standard; GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is its historical predecessor — practically identical, but UTC is the official reference today. CET (Central European Time) equals UTC+1 in winter, CEST (summer) UTC+2.
When does daylight saving time start and end in Europe?
In the EU, DST begins on the last Sunday of March (02:00 → 03:00) and ends on the last Sunday of October (03:00 → 02:00). The United Kingdom follows the same schedule. Russia, Turkey and Iceland no longer observe DST.
What time zone is Germany in?
Germany uses CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer. The IANA zone identifier is Europe/Berlin.
What time zone is Spain in?
Mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands use CET / CEST (UTC+1 / UTC+2). The Canary Islands are one hour behind: WET / WEST (UTC+0 / UTC+1). IANA zones: Europe/Madrid and Atlantic/Canary.
Why does China have only one time zone?
A political decision from 1949: despite spanning over 60° of longitude east-to-west, all of mainland China uses Beijing Time (UTC+8). In western Xinjiang the sun rises closer to noon as a result.
What is the International Date Line?
An imaginary line near the 180th meridian in the Pacific where a new calendar day begins. East of the line the date is one day earlier than west of it. It zigzags around Pacific island groups — Kiribati shifted west of the line in 1995, putting it at UTC+14.
How do I convert time between two time zones?
Use the converter above: pick the source zone, set date and time, then select the target zone. Daylight saving transitions are handled automatically — even when zones change DST on different dates.
