For tracking tropical cyclones the world's oceans are divided into fixed basins — each with a responsible warning centre. The boundaries mostly run along fixed meridians; only the Atlantic and eastern Pacific are separated by the Central American land mass.
Northern hemisphere: North Atlantic (AL) · Eastern Pacific (EP) · Central Pacific (CP) · Western Pacific (WP) · North Indian (NIO)
Southern hemisphere: South-West Indian (SI) · South Pacific (SP) · South Atlantic (SA)
In the western Pacific the storm is a typhoon, in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific a cyclone, in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific a hurricane — physically the same storm.
