meteo365.es live: Forest fires in Spain out of control

Severe forest fires, meteo365.es on site

For several days, severe forest fires have been raging in the Spanish autonomous communities of Extremadura, Galicia, Castilla & León, and Asturias. The military emergency unit (UME) is currently deployed with 1,400 personnel to support the fight against 11 forest fires. The forest fires are completely out of control, and while the ultra-socialist Prime Minister Sanchez claims that climate change is to blame, the facts are different. Firstly, the cause is not climate change, but arson.

25 people have already been taken into custody. A forest fire does not ignite spontaneously, and only very, very rarely is a lightning strike the cause. Secondly, the disaster is due to the absolute lack of equipment and manpower. There are far too few firefighting aircraft and helicopters, and political decision-makers often react too late.

meteo365.es was on site during the mega-forest fire in Extremadura, known by the abbreviation IFJarilla. Over 15,000 hectares have now burned, see graphic, and the fire is still out of control. Due to numerous road closures and a lack of press coverage, we found a spot at the Banos reservoir (Hervas), and on Monday morning the first helicopter arrived at 10:45 a.m. to take on water. There were only five approaches to fight the burning flank near Hervas. Then the helicopter was called to the other side of the mountain, to the Jerte Valley.

Of course, in addition to a lack of firefighting helicopters, there are also a lack of firefighters. Since the forest fire has been raging since August 13th and the firefighters cannot be on duty 24 hours a day, it's no wonder the fire cannot be brought under control.

The current forest fires are visible on our website.

Conclusion: Arson has been a major issue in Spain for years, and while the socialist government spends money on all sorts of nonsense, it cuts back on emergency services. The damage caused by forest fires is enormous. Human lives, animals, nature, and infrastructure are destroyed year after year.
