Terral expected in Málaga with temperatures up to 40°C

From Thursday into Friday, a cold drop will move into northwestern Spain and then advance south across the Iberian Peninsula.

This means falling temperatures and thunderstorms in Galicia, some of them potentially severe. The cooler air will push the hot air from the interior of Andalusia toward the coast, bringing Terral conditions to the Costa del Sol (Málaga Province) on Friday. This is a hot northwesterly wind. Daytime highs are expected to reach 40°C or even higher. Fortunately, the air will be very dry, so the physical heat stress will not feel quite as intense.

At the same time, Saharan dust (#Calima) will slowly but steadily move eastward toward the Mediterranean.

A look at the latest GFS trend forecast suggests that we could be heading for an extremely hot end to July. This will likely become the fourth heatwave of 2026.

Note on heatwaves:

Between 1995 and 2014, Spain experienced an average of 1.5 official heatwaves per year.

Since 2015, that number has increased to more than 3 heatwaves every summer on average.

The record year remains 2017, when five official heatwaves were registered across Spain.
