Spain Weather Report – Fourth Heatwave of 2026 Officially Confirmed
Spain is preparing for its fourth official heatwave of 2026. According to the latest special weather warning, the heatwave will begin on Wednesday, July 29, and is expected to last at least until Sunday, August 2, with the potential to continue into next week.
A persistent high-pressure system over western Europe will dominate the weather pattern, bringing clear skies, abundant sunshine and steadily rising temperatures across much of the country. The hottest conditions are expected in the southwestern river valleys, the Ebro Valley and parts of northeastern Spain, where daytime highs will frequently exceed 40°C.
Temperatures climbing day by day
Monday and Tuesday will serve as a warm-up phase, with temperatures increasing across much of Spain as southerly winds transport increasingly hot air from North Africa.
By Wednesday, the official heatwave begins. Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach:
40–42°C across inland Andalusia and the Guadalquivir Valley
39–42°C in the Ebro Valley and northeastern depressions
37–39°C across La Mancha and parts of the Northern Plateau
37–38°C on Gran Canaria, with additional warming expected across the Canary Islands
Only the Cantabrian coast may experience a brief and modest temperature drop on Thursday. Elsewhere, the intense heat will continue through Friday and into the weekend.
Tropical nights and extreme wildfire danger
The prolonged heat will also lead to very warm nights, especially in southern and eastern Spain, making overnight cooling difficult in many areas.
At the same time, wildfire danger will increase to extreme levels. The combination of exceptional heat, low humidity and locally gusty southerly winds will create highly favourable conditions for the rapid spread of wildfires.
In the Canary Islands, a weakening marine layer will allow hot, dry air and Saharan dust (Calima) to spread across higher elevations, further increasing temperatures.
Looking ahead
Current trend forecasts indicate that the fourth heatwave of the year may continue beyond the weekend, although confidence decreases for next week. Even so, there is currently no indication of a significant or lasting cooldown.
