Weather in Málaga - No improvement despite several days of rain

Axarquía reservoir at historic low

Spring 2023 was the second-driest period according to weather recordings. Particularly the province of Málaga has been affected by the lack of precipitation (only record temperatures). To everyone´s surprise, there have been some rainy days during the month of June.

However, the amounts of rain were very low and did not have any positive effects to relieve water stress. So it does not come as a surprise that the reservoir of La Viñuela (Axarquia, Málaga) is currently reporting an all-time low. Right now, it is only 9,3 % full.

Apart from the lack of precipitation, the massive consumption of water within this subsidised agriculture plays a huge role. New avocado and mango plantations are laid out on a daily basis and most of the illegal wells extract groundwater from depths of more than 200 metres.

Although the EU has been allocating billions of euros in order to promote the construction of wastewater treatment plants since 1986, there are barely any WWTP in place. The lack of supervision regarding the application of funds and financial management aggravate the situation in the province of Málaga.

The desertification of Andalusia progresses and it seems to be impossible to stop. The situation will heat up dramatically since no new wastewater treatment and/or desalination plants are planned to be constructed anytime soon. It seems as if our policymakers are made up completely of amateurs.
