We remember August 1, 2024. We wanted to climb Veleta Peak at 3,398 m in the Andalusian Sierra Nevada, but had to abandon the climb at 3,100 m.
The air was thin, and we no longer had the stamina for the last 300 meters of elevation. (
Here's the article about it)
This year, we arrived on July 30th and started our tour again at dawn on July 31st from Las Sabinas at 2,200 m at 15.8 °C. On the way to the summit, our physical condition was still good at 3,100 m, and giving up, as in the previous year, was not an option. Motivated by the view of the incredibly beautiful nature, with the Laguna de las Yeguas/Valle Rio Dilar below us, we then climbed the last 300 meters. With every step, the air became thinner and cooler, and our steps slowed. But our goal, the Veleta peak, was finally reached, and we were rewarded with an incredible and unforgettable panoramic view of the Sierra Nevada. At 3,398 m, Veleta is the second highest peak in Spain, only its direct neighbor, Mulhacen, is higher at 3,478 m.
For the descent, we took the Veleta chairlift to 3,028 m and then the gondola in Borreguiles to the Pradollano valley station. From there, we walked back up to Las Sabinas, where our OB-Van was parked. This final climb was truly a challenge, and if there had been an Uber, we would have called one.
On August 1st, we headed south along the A-348 of the Sierra Nevada back toward Malaga. We first passed Puerto de La Ragua. An incredibly beautiful forest area with apparently stunning (perfectly signposted) hiking trails at an altitude of 2,000 m. This area is also part of the Sierra Nevada and hasn't yet been discovered by tourists. Since we had sore muscles from the previous day, we couldn't really immerse ourselves, but meteo365.es will soon make up for that.
Conclusion: Andalusia is so much more than just beaches and sea. Andalusia offers spectacular regions for hikers and nature lovers, all year round.
