Tsunamis are also possible in the Alboran Sea

Earthquake - Zone in the Alboran Sea particularly at risk

Numerous severe earthquakes are currently shaking the Kamchatka region. The peak recorded was an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, resulting in a tsunami.

But you don't have to look too far east; the Andalusian coastal region is also a dangerous earthquake zone; see our earthquake map. In the Alboran Sea, tectonic plates are colliding, with the African plate advancing toward the Eurasian plate. These tensions regularly discharge themselves in earthquakes. On May 11, 2011, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 occurred in Lorca, resulting in nine deaths and 324 injuries. Given the poor construction, this isn't a big surprise. On July 14, 2025, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck off the coast of Almeria, and fortunately, the quake did not cause structural damage.

Scientists have reconstructed severe earthquakes in the 14th century in the Alboran Sea, particularly in the coastal region of Algeria, and claim to have recorded a tsunami with a wave height of 5 meters (Maouche et al., 2009, Marine Geology).

Conclusion: Whenever you buy a house or apartment here, inquire about the building structure. How earthquake-proof is your new home? Always have an emergency kit packed, including the most important documents and some cash. Civil protection here in Andalusia is certainly not as well-equipped as it should be. Even today, hospitals are often at their limits during normal operations.
