Where the data comes from
We combine several warning centres because none of them covers the whole planet: the National Hurricane Center for the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific, the JMA for the Western Pacific, the JTWC as a global supplement, GDACS as an aggregator, plus the model forecasts from ECMWF. Where sources disagree we show each one separately rather than inventing an average.
The categories
Classification follows the Saffir-Simpson scale and is based on wind speed. The same storm is called a typhoon in the Western Pacific, a cyclone in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific, and a hurricane in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific — physically it is the same weather event.
