What do these numbers mean?

Several hundred earthquakes are recorded worldwide every single day — almost none of them felt by anyone. The figures on this page come from ten seismological services (including USGS, EMSC, GEOFON and GEONET) and are merged continuously.

Why are there so many small earthquakes?

The magnitude scale is logarithmic: a magnitude 6 quake releases around 32 times the energy of a magnitude 5 — and roughly a thousand times that of a magnitude 4. That is why weak earthquakes are orders of magnitude more common than strong ones. Below magnitude 2, quakes are virtually never felt by people.

What does “with alert level” mean?

For significant earthquakes the US Geological Survey estimates the expected impact using its PAGER system. Counted here are all events from yellow upwards — those where at least regional impact is expected. It is an automatic preliminary estimate, not a damage report.
