The period from January to August also saw a new record
With only a few days remaining until the end of the meteorological summer, Spain is heading towards a remarkable new weather record.

Meteorological summer runs from 1 June to 31 August, and preliminary data now indicate that summer 2026 is virtually certain to become the warmest on record in mainland Spain.
So far, the average temperature has been an extraordinary 2.5°C above the 1991–2020 reference average.
To put that into perspective, the previous record was set only last summer, which finished 2.2°C above average. The summer of 2022 currently ranks third, at 2.1°C above average.
2026 is breaking another temperature record
The exceptional warmth is not limited to the summer months.
Looking at temperatures from January through August, 2026 is currently the warmest year on record for Spain as a whole — and by a significant margin.
The previous warmest January-to-August period occurred in 2024, but temperatures in 2026 are running clearly ahead of that record.
Perhaps even more striking is the longer-term picture: the five warmest January-to-August periods on record are the five most recent ones.
It is another clear indication of just how exceptional recent temperatures in Spain have become.
