A medicane intensifies, heading for Greece
A Mediterranean cyclone with tropical characteristics
A medicane has formed between Libya and Sicily: a Mediterranean cyclone with tropical characteristics, a kind of small-scale hurricane. In our satellite image (GeoColor and precipitation) its increasingly organised structure can already be seen clearly.
Why now?
Sea temperatures are exceptionally high, and that, together with very favourable atmospheric conditions, is exactly the fuel these systems need to intensify.
What our models say
According to our ICON-EU model, tomorrow Tuesday the medicane will intensify strongly and move east, towards Greece. In the core we expect:
Wind gusts of up to 125 km/h
Rainfall totals of up to 128 mm in a single day
Most affected area: the Ionian Sea, the south-west of the Peloponnese and Crete.
It is worth noting that ICON-EU, because of its resolution, tends to smooth out the small, compact core of a medicane: higher-resolution models point to an even more intense system.
