Andalusia may be facing its first heatwave of 2026
According to the latest trend forecasts from our American weather model GFS, an exceptionally hot weather pattern could begin on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The provinces of Seville, Córdoba, and Jaén are expected to be particularly affected, where daytime highs could reach up to 45°C (113°F).
When the air seems to burn
At temperatures of 45°C, it can feel as if the air itself is burning. Hot winds relentlessly whip against your face, and even short periods outdoors become physically demanding. However, the actual heat stress can be significantly higher.
While official air temperatures may be around 45°C, ground surface temperatures can range from 55°C to well above 70°C (131°F to over 158°F), depending on the type of surface. Asphalt, concrete, and dry soil heat up particularly intensely.
Not unusual for Andalusia – but still dangerous
Although such temperatures are by no means unusual in Andalusia at the end of June, they represent a major challenge for people, animals, and nature alike. Elderly individuals, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions are especially vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.
The ongoing drought and low humidity levels are also increasing the risk of wildfires across large parts of the region.
Many Andalusians escape to the coast
There is a reason why many residents of the particularly hot provinces of Seville, Córdoba, and Jaén own a second home on the Andalusian coast or spend the summer months there. While temperatures inland can soar well above 40°C (104°F), sea breezes along the coast often provide much more comfortable conditions.
