Late-summer comeback: sunshine, beaches – and up to 38 °C in Spain
Temperatures rise again from the weekend, reaching 38 °C in the southwest on Monday – while the Mediterranean is still up to 27 °C.

More than 30 °C across much of Spain and up to 38 °C in the southwest: the heat returns from the weekend and peaks on Monday, 14 September. Anyone hoping to squeeze in more sunshine and beach time in mid-September can look forward to excellent conditions – late summer is stepping on the accelerator once again.
After a milder spell, temperatures rise noticeably from Saturday. By Monday, our temperature map will be glowing in strong shades of orange and red again, and the southwest is heading back towards the 40 °C mark. Only on Wednesday, Aemet reported a record summer with 61 heatwave days.
Central Spain heats up considerably too. Madrid is forecast to reach around 33 °C, Toledo 34 °C and Ciudad Real about 33 °C. Further northeast, Zaragoza and Lleida could both climb to around 34 °C.
Perhaps most remarkable is how far north the heat reaches. Bilbao could hit 34 °C on Monday. Galicia warms up significantly as well, with around 33 °C forecast for Lugo, while the Atlantic coast stays much fresher – A Coruña is expected to reach around 24 °C.
On the Costa Blanca, Benidorm is forecast to reach around 28 °C, while Valencia could climb to 31 °C. Barcelona is looking at around 29 °C, Almería around 28 °C, and Málaga, at roughly 27 °C, should be wonderfully comfortable.
The Balearic Islands look just as inviting: Palma is forecast to reach around 30 °C, while Ibiza should see highs close to 27 °C – ideal temperatures for the beach, a seaside lunch or a long afternoon by the Mediterranean.
Around 22 °C is being measured off Málaga, while Cartagena reports around 27.5 °C. The sea near Valencia is at about 26 °C and near Barcelona about 26.5 °C. It is warmest around Mallorca: the Dragonera buoy is currently reporting 27.4 °C.
There is certainly no autumn chill in the Mediterranean yet. In many holiday regions, the water still feels like midsummer.
Inland, and particularly in the southwest, the heat needs to be taken seriously, however. With 35 to almost 40 °C, plenty of water, shade and a relaxed pace through the hottest part of the day are essential again.
Along the coasts, the combination looks close to perfect: sunshine, summery air and a warm sea. Spain is showing once more why late summer can be one of the best times of the year here. Not ready for autumn yet? Neither is Spain – summer is going into extra time.

The strongest heat will once again be concentrated over Andalusia and Extremadura. Seville and Badajoz are forecast to reach around 38 °C on Monday, with Córdoba near 37 °C and Plasencia around 36 °C. In the hottest parts of the southwest, temperatures could locally approach 40 °C.Central Spain heats up considerably too. Perfect beach weather on the Mediterranean and the Balearics
