The live weather webcam stands in Lagos, a small village in the hills above Vélez-Málaga, and looks out from there over the whole bay. In the foreground, terraced slopes with avocado and mango plantations and the white bands of polytunnels run down to the coastal plain; beyond lies Torre del Mar. On clear days the view reaches along the eastern Costa del Sol to the mountain silhouettes towards Málaga. The Axarquía is Europe's most important growing region for subtropical fruit: avocados, mangos and cherimoyas ripen here in a climate kept especially mild by the shelter of the mountains and the nearness of the sea. Torre del Mar, the coastal town of Vélez-Málaga with its long seafront promenade, lies directly below – from up here you see both at once: the agricultural hinterland and the coast. Through the camera you can see how the weather stands over the eastern Costa del Sol: whether clouds are building over the mountains, how clear the view across the bay is and whether calima, the fine Saharan dust, is lying over the sea.
