The live weather webcam looks out over the rooftops of the old town onto the Alhambra, which sits on its wooded hill above Granada. From left to right stand the palaces with their battlements, the massive Renaissance building of Charles V and finally the towers of the Alcazaba, over the highest of which the Spanish flag flies. Below, the slope drops steeply away, densely covered with cypresses, pines and deciduous trees. The Alhambra is the most visited monument in Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. From the 13th century the Moorish rulers of the Nasrid dynasty expanded it into a palace and fortress city; after the Reconquista the Renaissance palace of Charles V was added. The reddish tone of its walls gave it its name – al-Ḥamrāʾ, the red one. Through the camera you can see how the light falls over the Alhambra – backlit in the morning, warm on the red walls in the evening – and what the weather is like in Granada. The city lies at around 680 metres altitude at the foot of the Sierra Nevada: the summers are hot and dry, the winters considerably colder than on the coast.
