About this webcam

The live weather webcam looks out from the edge of the dunes over the Playa de Los Lances, the great beach of Tarifa. A wooden boardwalk leads down between dune grass and palms onto the pale, unusually wide sand; down by the water stand colourful sun umbrellas, and the sea shifts from the turquoise of the shallows into deep blue. On the horizon the coast of Africa appears, and in front of it cargo ships pass through the Strait of Gibraltar. Tarifa lies at the southernmost tip of the European mainland, where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet – only around fourteen kilometres separate the town from Morocco. It is precisely this location that makes the place Europe's wind mecca: the Levante from the east and the Poniente from the west are funnelled and accelerated in the strait, which is why Los Lances is one of the best-known kite and windsurf spots in the world. The beach is several kilometres long and borders a nature reserve. Through the camera you can see what matters here: whether the wind is up, how the waves are running and how busy the beach is. We also show the current readings from our weather station at Playa de Los Lances – temperature, wind, gusts and air pressure in real time – along with the hourly forecast, the wave forecast and the tides. Before heading to the beach, it's above all worth checking the wind direction and the gusts.
